Day 90 - Passed out Easter Candy

Happy Easter!!  Today is one of those days to spend with family, celebrate the holiday, eat and relax.  Unfortunately there are businesses that need to remain open on Easter.  I'm sure employees working today would rather be celebrating with their families so we thought a little Easter candy would cheer them up.

So for today's random act of kindness we delivered some chocolate Easter candy to employees working at CVS, a gas station and The Dollar Tree.  Everyone was very surprised and loved that we had thought about them.

Happy Easter!!

Day 89 - Diapers for Children's Orphanage

In 1986, a woman named Guadalupe Carmona (Mama Lupita) took in four abandoned children in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico. Though she already had four children of her own, she felt God's call to help those less fortunate.

Casa Hogar Elim is now home to over 100 children of all ages.

Because the orphanage is privately run, it relies completely upon private donations. Our wonderful church, Preston Trail, partners with Mama Lupita to help her raise strong Christian men and women who will have a positive impact on their community.

A group from Preston Trail makes visits to Casa Hogar Elim on a regular basis.  Recently I contacted one of their ministry leaders asking what supplies the children are most in need of so we could have a collection before their next visit.  She said diapers and baby wipes are most in need.

Last week we held a diaper drive and collected donations from daycare families as well as members of my women's bible study group.  So for today's random act of kindness we gathered all our collected diapers and wipes and they will be delivered to the church tomorrow for Casa Hogar.

Day 88 - Took Pictures at Mary Poppins

Tonight as an early birthday gift for the girls we took them to see Mary Poppins the musical.  They love the movie and enjoyed the play just as much!  There were quite a few backdrops for photo opportunities throughout the theater.  Whenever someone appeared to be looking around for someone to take their picture we jumped right in.  By the end of the night we had taken photos for about 8 or so families/couples.  Everyone smiled beautifully!!

Day 87 - Anti-Bullying Bracelets for Kindergarteners

A few nights ago Chris and I watched the documentary The Bully Project a wonderful production on the current bullying epidemic in today's schools.  Bullying is such a huge issue in this country and I recommend the film to anyone who may be a parent or work with children in any aspect.  Not only is bullying being seen in younger and younger children but with advances in technology, children are being tormented around the clock using cell phones and social media outlets such as Facebook and Twitter.

After watching the film I was convicted to do something for the girls' school to bring awareness to bullying and hopefully start some dialogues at home.  The girls' school has a dress code and uniform policy so I had to be careful to purchase an item that the children could wear during school hours.

So for today's random act of kindness I purchased 100 anti-bullying bracelets, one for each of the kindergarteners.  My hope is that these bracelets can initiate discussions at school and at home.  I think we as parents are the foundation and need to teach our children about compassion and how to treat others that may be different from us.  Whether it is physical differences, social, economic, religious, etc. everyone deserves respect and yearns for love and acceptance.  I want my girls to stand up against bullying and be the voice for the weak or those who may be victims of bullying.

Day 86 - Paid for Someone's Personal Training Session

One of my amazing childcare moms is a personal trainer for an amazing facility where I used to work.  As I was thinking about these random acts I really wanted to perform one that could help encourage fitness and health.  Having a personal trainer is one of those wonderful luxuries that not all of us can afford.  Having worked in the fitness industry for years and years I also understand the bond that is formed between client and trainer and the sacrifices some clients will make financially to stay active with their trainer.

So I approached my friend and asked her if any of her clients could benefit from a free session and it did not take her long to come up with a name.  A single mom that works very hard to provide for her family while also trying to keep that life balance through exercise.

I told my friend I'd love to pay for her client's next session as a random act of kindness.  Without hesitation she offered to split the cost with me to perform her own random act.  Such a perfect example of why I'm on this journey.  To maybe inspire others to perform their own random acts and really make a difference to change the world one small act at a time.

Day 85 - Took Candy to the Gymnastics Instructors

The girls have been attending the same gymnastics studio, Texas Best, for almost 4 years now and we love all of their instructors!  For today's random act of kindness we decided to bring them some boxes of Easter candy to enjoy this week.  Enjoy your gummies!!

Day 84 - Bought Someone a Car Wash

Our poor minivan was in desperate need of a wash and vacuum so the girls and I headed to the full service car wash after all the kids were gone today.  They love riding through the car wash section and while your car is being vacuumed and detailed their waiting area is a kids' paradise.  Free unlimited fountain drinks, toys galore and a TV :).

While we were in line to pay I realized we still needed our random act of kindness for the day so I thought what a great opportunity.  So for today's random act of kindness we paid for a car wash for the car behind us.

My minivan thanked me and hopefully the car behind us enjoyed their newly cleaned and vacuumed car!!

Day 83 - Toys for CASA

Every year thousands of Texas children are removed from their homes because of severe abuse, neglect, or domestic violence. CASA of Collin County's mission is to train community volunteers to advocate the best interests of these children while they are in foster care and sadly child abuse cases continue to rise at a staggering rate.

Being a parent and also spending my current career caring for children my heart hurts for children that have fallen victim to abuse or are living in situations that are anything but loving, caring and encouraging.

I appreciate all the CASA advocates do to be heros to those children and anything I can do to help those kids and take any small burden off the staff and advocates I would do willingly.

So for today's random act of kindness the girls and I purchased some toys for our local CASA office.  Hope some children can really get some joy from these toys.

Day 82 - Popcorn for Saturday Movie Night

Saturday night is one of those nights that very often turns into a movie night.  Whether folks go out to the movies or decide to stay in, it's definitely a favorite.  Just down the street from our house we have a CVS across the street from a Walgreens.  Both have Redboxes outside that are regularly visited by us for weekend movie nights.

And what goes perfectly with a movie?  Popcorn of course! So for today's random act of kindness I attached a bag of popcorn to both the CVS Redbox as well as the one outside of Walgreens with one of my RAK cards.

Hope some nice people enjoy their movie and popcorn!!

Day 81 - Bought Someone a Coffee

I love Groupon and I love coffee so combining the 2 makes for a pretty exciting day.  Today Groupon posted an offer for a $10 Starbucks giftcard for only $5!  I thought it would be a perfect opportunity to show someone that has been working very hard a little appreciation.

We have a mother at the girls' school that has been working tirelessly for a fellow school family in need and I thought she could use a little reward.  So for today's random act of kindness I purchased the Groupon and sent it as an anonymous gift.  I appreciate her endless dedication to this family and I hope she enjoys her coffee..or tea :)!!

Day 80 - Kind "Bombed" the Library

I came across this video and then shared it with the girls.  I asked them if they would like to do something similar for today's random act of kindness and they loved it.  The girls have been begging to go to the library for a while now but with our crazy schedule recently we haven't been able to make it.  I thought this would be a great opportunity for them to pick out a few books and also complete a random act.  So for today's random act we kind "bombed" the library!

We wrote little encouraging notes on paper and hid them in books in the children's department.  They responded to this project enthusiastically, coming back to make more messages several times. Each kid decided what section to "bomb" which was fun. Early readers were hit the hardest.

The secretive nature and sneaking around for good seemed to inspire them as they talked about what kids would think when they opened a book and a sweet note fell out.

The idea of creating a little something and leaving it and your trace in the world is powerful for kids (and adults). What seems simple and almost like a prank, actually connects kids to their community and gives them a sense of agency within it.

They can actively shape their environment.

Day 79 - Made Coffee

I love my weekly bible study time.  A chance to get a little girl time, with an awesome group of ladies, while also deepening my knowledge and relationship with God.  Today for some reason I arrived almost an hour early and decided I would just read a little.  Until I noticed there was no coffee!!  Early evening coffee for a bunch of ladies, a lot of which are moms that have been running around like crazy all day, is a MUST.

I decided I would be helpful and make all the coffee.  There was one employee there already that agreed to show me how to work the closet-size contraption that is the coffee maker.  I made 8 huge coffee containers (regular and decaf) and we were set.  300 women would not be without their caffeine tonight.  Whoa that was close!

Day 78 - Sewing Kits for Africa

While browsing at Dollar Tree a few days ago I found the cutest little sewing kits!!  I knew I could find a wonderful use for these so I bought the last 10 they had.  After emailing a few local contacts I then expanded to a national search and found a women in Virginia that puts together sewing kits and sends them to missions in Africa.

Judith, from Attic Treasures and Sew Easy Sewing, was moved to help women and children in Kenya so she and her husband traveled on a mission trip one summer to deliver sewing and first aid kits.  After returning she made it her mission to continue collecting supplies and putting together kits to further help the women of Africa.

She allows folks to donate supplies for the kits and will even give them store credit equal to the amount they spent on the supplies.  People can also purchase or put together their own sewing kits and ship them to her, which is what I will be doing for today's random act of kindness.  I hope these kits touch the lives of a small group of women.  Allowing them to make things they may need, fix their children's clothes or maybe even generate an income for items they are able to create.  I think it's wonderful what you are doing Judith!!  Keep it up!

Day 77 - Passed Down and Donated Clothes

We have been so lucky since the girls were born with clothes.  From a friend's co-worker who had twins a little older than the girls that gave us clothes for their first year, to Chris' co-worker and another friend of ours that are always passing down clothes to the girls.  We are extremely blessed.  We can probably count the new clothing outfits we have purchased for them over the last 6 years on 2 hands.  So to pay that forward we always pass down their clothes that don't fit to my niece, daycare families, others in need or to our local Goodwill or resale store.

So for today's random act of kindness I boxed up some clothes for my niece and also gathered a bag for Goodwill.  The one thing our girls would never be guilty of is being frivolous with their clothes.  They never have an over abundance of clothes at any given time which allows them to love all the clothes they receive from others and really get all the possible wear out of them.  Hopefully their clothes will bring the same love to another little girl.

Day 76 - Donations to the Food Pantry

The Frisco Food Pantry is definitely one of our monthly trips and we love to help them out whenever we can.  Today the girls and I checked their online list to see what they were most in need of and then made a trip to the store.  It's wonderful because they update their most needed items list DAILY so you can always get them exactly what they need at any given time.

The girls love dropping off donations because sometimes the staff will let them look around and they love seeing how it all works.  They are amazed that the store front of the food pantry actually looks like a real grocery store and that their items will go on those shelves with everyone else's donations.

Food pantries are such a lifeline to so many families in need so please remember your local food pantry, not just during the holidays but all year long.  They rely on ordinary people like us to keep those shelves stocked for families facing hard times.

Day 75 - Handed Out Freezer Pops

Today the weather in Texas was gorgeous!  Low 80s, sunny and amazing!  The girls wanted to come up with today's random act and we thought it was a great idea.  They decided to pass something out to neighbors walking or driving by and with a freezer full of freezer pops it turned into a great random act.  They made a sign and then Ryan also wanted to collect donations so they choose the SPCA and made a little donation sign for a donation bucket.

They received a lot of waves, smiles, a few honks and definitely enjoyed their time outside!

Day 74 - Children's Books for the Pediatrician

We had to run Kailey to the doctor today for something and remembered from our last visit that they didn't really have a huge selection of children's books in the waiting area.  The girls and I thought it would be a great idea to go through our books and pick a few to take to the doctor with us.

We wrapped up the books with a little yarn and brought them with us to our appointment.  The staff was super appreciative and allowed the girls to add the books to the waiting room collection themselves.  Hope some children get a lot of enjoyment out of the new additions.

If you are over run with books and are looking for some great places to donate here are just a few ideas for book donations.
Locally:
 Library
Homeless shelter or youth center
Dentist or doctor's office
Goodwill or Salvation Army
Stores such as Half Price Books

Where to Ship Books:

Day 73 - Donated Apples to Pie it Forward

It is National Pi Day! (yes, like 3.14). I'll be celebrating by supporting actual pie instead of solving math problems. I love hearing stories about people out there making a difference just one small act at a time.  Today I read about some of those people...Sarah and Chris.  OccuPIE Wednesdays was founded in July 2012 by Sarah and Chris and is a revolution that's all about love, kindness, fun, and of course, delicious PIE. They are serving up the values of sharing and equality, one slice at a time.

They started giving away free weekly pie in Ann Arbor but have now embarked on a mission around the country to serve pie and smiles.  Sarah, their executive "Weirdo Do-Gooder", says she is "on a mission to change the world with the power of pie".  They are a little over a week into their travels and have already covered 1700 miles and visited 7 states!!

Folks can support their cause by hosting them (you get free pie :) ) or by donating to cover items along the way including gas, car maintenance, supplies for serving the pies and of course ingredients.  For today's random act of kindness I donated a couple of 5lb bags of apples to make 3 pies.  I wish them the best on their journey and know they will definitely touch and inspire people all along the way!!  Pie it Forward!!

Day 72 - Teddy Bears for the ER

We have been very blessed to have only visited the emergency room a couple of times with the girls in these last 6 years.  This year though has been so tough with illnesses for so many and I have read of a number of friends taking their little ones to the ER for everything from the flu to stomach bugs and ear infections.  The ER can be an intimating and scary place for a little kid with all those strange people poking and prodding at you and asking mom and dad all those questions.  So for today's random act of kindness the girls and I decided to bring some soft, cuddly teddy bears to the local ER for children that are feeling a little uneasy.  Just a little something for them to love on and cuddle with to take their minds off why they are there.  Hope these bears bring some comfort to a few little kiddos and hopefully their parents as well.

Day 71 - Left Notes on Parked Cars

I saw this random act on another blogger's site and thought it looked so fun!!  Usually when someone spots something under their windshield wiper from afar their level of annoyance goes up just a notch.  What could it be??  A parking ticket, advertisements they don't need, religious flyers, etc.  So today, for a few people, I'm hoping to turn that annoyance into a smile with encouraging notes under their wipers..."Happy Tuesday", "Have a great day", "Make someone smile", "You rock!".  The girls helped me write the notes and then put them on cars.  I'm definitely going to leave a small notebook and pen in my car for those days when I want to spread a little love.  Such a fun and easy random act that could really brighten someone's day.

Day 70 - $20 CVS Gift Card for a Stranger

Today I was feeling a bit under the weather most of the day so I sent Chris to CVS this evening to pick up a few things.  I love, love, love CVS and most of the employees there know me by name.  I also told Chris to keep his eyes open for an opportunity for today's random act of kindness.

As he was checking out with one of my favorite employees he decided to purchase a $20 gift card and have her gift it to someone later in the evening.  I'm so excited to go back and see who received the card.  I'm hoping it made their night!

Day 69 - Paid for a Mom and Son's Movie Tickets

Today was a date day for Chris and I.  We had previously purchased a Groupon for 4 movie tickets at The Studio Movie Grill so thought it would be a great time to use 2 of them.  As we were standing in line to redeem our tickets we decided it would probably be a while until we visited SMG again so we decided to offer 2 of our 4 tickets to someone else in line as today's random act of kindness.  Behind us was a very sweet boy with his mom.  We told them we'd like to offer to pay for their movie tickets with our Groupon.  They were going to see Oz.

Like with many random acts of kindness they were a bit apprehensive at first but after the employee assured them their tickets were paid for they were so thankful.  I really hope they enjoyed their movie!

Day 68 - Gave Away Free Appetizers

For months Texas Land and Cattle has been one of our go-to spots for Saturday lunches because kids eat free.  We were very sad to hear that this week is the last week they will be offering the kids eat free promotion.  A while back I purchased a discount card as another random act of kindness and one of the deals on there was a free appetizer at Texas Land and Cattle.  You can use the cards as many times as you'd like through 2013.

Because we knew we probably wouldn't be visiting as much anymore we wanted to gift someone else with the free appetizer card.  Hoping they would be able to take advantage of it more than we would.  As we were getting ready to leave we saw a nice couple come in and Ryan ran over to give them the discount card.  They were very appreciative and said they would definitely be using it!

Day 67 - Passed Out Ounces of Skin Cancer Prevention

There are more than 3.5 million new cases of skin cancer diagnosed and 2.2 million people treated in the U.S. each year.  For today's random act of kindness the girls and I passed out sunscreen to raise awareness for skin cancer.  This would typically be a summer act but I think it's so important that people be reminded of their skin care year-round.

A couple of weeks ago I visited all my physicians and completed my annual check-ups.  One of those visited was a dermatologist (my first visit ever).  After a full body screening I had a questionable mole scrapped for a biopsy.  Moles that are biopsied and come back atypical are then rated by severity...mild, moderate and severe.  Atypical moles that are determined to be severe have the highest chance for melanoma transformation. Melanoma being the deadliest of all skin cancers.

After a grueling 10 day wait I was informed that my mole was severely atypical.  The nurse I spoke with later referred to it as a pre-cancerous melanoma.  Irregularity of the cells simply on the surface of the skin but nothing that had penetrated any deeper. After dealing with the initial fear I started kicking myself for the years and years of damage to my skin I had inflicted upon myself.  Sun worshiper to the core from my pre-teens on, tanning beds, lack of regard for sunscreen most of the time and the list goes on and on.  To add to my personal choices, when looking up risk factors for skin cancer my complexion is right up there as #1 or #2 on most lists:

Fair complexion, blond or red hair, freckles, blue or green eyes and/or a tendency to sunburn

For years my mom (and others) warned me about the ill effects of my poor choices but I was in my teens and early twenties and we all know how well children listen at that age.  Now I am paying the price ten fold for not following the advice of others.

So yesterday I had my mole surgically excised and when I return to have the stitches removed I will have 2 additional moles biopsied and some sun damage on my face treated.  After everything is taken care of I will have to follow up with the dermatologist every 6 months for screenings to pro-actively catch and remove any changing or newly appearing moles.  And not just for the next couple of years...for the rest of my life.  That's a pretty hefty price to pay for a little fun in the sun.

Luckily, they caught it very early on and it shouldn't be anything that causes much of a threat.  It did make me re-evaluate how I live my life and the steps needed to ensure I am protecting my skin.  What's most scary is to think of what could have happened had I not gone to get screened and if it had not been flagged early.  So I urge everyone to "Get to Know Your Moles"!!  If anything changes in their color, size, border or overall appearance please get them checked as soon as possible and schedule those yearly skin cancer screenings.  Early prevention of melanoma and other skin cancers is the key and please, please, please wear your sunscreen!!  Not just in the summer time but all year round.  An ounce of prevention is worth pounds of cure!

Day 67 - Passed out ounces and ounces of prevention

Please choose your sunscreen over this...

(I debated sharing a personal picture but honestly I would have never thought removing an itty bitty mole would require such a large incision so felt inclined to share it to help with awareness.  Please protect your skin.)

Day 66 - Spread the Word to End the Word

Yesterday was the annual day of awareness for the organization The R-Word-Spread the Word to End the Word.

The R-word is the word 'retard(ed)'. Why does it hurt? The R-word hurts because it is exclusive. It's offensive. It's derogatory.  I've seen it hurt families and individuals I am close to and would love to do anything I can to help raise awareness.

The organization's campaign asks people to pledge to stop saying the R-word as a starting point toward creating more accepting attitudes and communities for all people.  Language affects attitudes and attitudes affect actions.

For today's random act of kindness I made an online pledge to use respectful, people-first language.

Day 65 - Sent Supplies for Survival Kits

One of my buddies from college founded a wonderful organization, to honor his father, in our home state of Ohio called The 411 Foundation.  The 411 Foundation "helps build and sustain healthy communities by providing young adults the tools to enhance their quality of life and empowering them to achieve lifelong success".

One of their on-going projects are these wonderful survival kits for those in need.  They include everything from sleeping bags and clothing to toiletries and medicine.

For today's random act of kindness the girls and I headed to my second home (I'm not going to say where...hehe) and stocked up on supplies from The 411 Foundation's online list to fill survival kits.  We packed the box this morning and after school we'll head to the post office and it will be on it's way to you Sean!!  You're an inspiration to those kids you help and all those around you!!

Day 64 - Cancelled Internet on My Phone

I've always had an addictive personality.  High school and college definitely had their activities (and people).  In grad school when I officially gave my life to Christ I probably read every single book written by Max Lucado and a handful of other authors, bought every Christian CD at the time, and purchased every Christian t-shirt and bracelet I could find.  After grad school picked up running but it wasn't enough to just run 5ks, I needed to run marathons.  And of course couldn't just do a week of random acts of kindness...I had to do a year.

These stories of 100% passion (aka obsession, aka addiction) are sprinkled all throughout my life and will continue I'm sure because it is just a part of my wiring.  They define me in a way and lead to sometimes sporadic and whimsical decisions in their wake.  So not only do I get something on my mind and am unable to let it go, I also have a tendency to make decisions without a lot of contemplation behind them.  A reason Chris is great for me.  He acts as my voice of reason on most of these in-the-moment acts and decisions.  Today though he is out of town so I am left to my own devices.

Along these same lines if I have something I'm trying to refrain from I go into it with the best intentions in the world but always fail miserably.  For example the frozen credit card idea would never work for me.  I had to physically cut my credit cards up and throw them away before honestly starting to paying off debt.  Tried to avoid Facebook last year during Lent...it last 3 days.  So knowing it's available is always my security blanket and I typically resort back after a short period.

So for today's random act of kindness the recipients (my family primarily) are not so anonymous but the act is definitely random in that it is being made purely on a whim inspired by an article read yesterday.  It's something I've been trying to work on but failing at miserably.  Dear Mom on the iPhone

So for today's random act of kindness I have decided to remove my entire internet data plan from my cell phone.  No more Facebook, constant access to emails, music, internet access, etc.  As soon as I arrived home this morning after dropping the girls off at school, before any families arrived, I called and made the change.  Calls and texts only.  I didn't want to put too much thought into it because I knew I would probably change my mind.  It'll be like a Band-aid.  It will definitely sting at first but once it's off...it will be liberating.

It will leave me with more time to dedicate to my family (more time than I even realize or would be willing to admit).  Actually spending time with them while listening to them...instead of partially listening with my face in my phone.  I  will definitely miss some things but this is so worth the sacrifice (as inappropriate as that word really is in this context).  I feel good about this one and it will be effective March 23rd so I have a few weeks to prepare myself.

Day 64 - Removed cell phone internet

**UPDATE:  I chickened out on this one and went about a week before getting the service back.  I'm definitely replacing this act with another and have made a concerted effort to be more aware of my cell phone use when spending time with the family.

Day 63 - Passed Out Notes to Encourage at the Park

The weather today was gorgeous!!  Sunny, low 80's so I knew we had to take advantage!  Kailey suggested we head out after the daycare children were gone to write encouraging notes on the sidewalk like we did a while back.  I thought it was a great idea but thought we could go one step further.

I asked the girls if they wanted to write notes on the sidewalk but maybe also make little notes of encouragement (with candy) to pass out to random people.  They thought it was a great idea so we then decided to enlist the help of the Little Acorns to pass out these little baggies of sweetness and cheer.  The girls and Acorns made all the notes with only a little assistance from me on spelling and then I attached them to the baggies of chocolate.

After nap we all headed out to the park.  We passed the baggies out on our walk there and then to people we saw at the park.  The kids had so much fun doing it and people really loved it!

This past weekend I saw two wonderful and inspiring movies on Netflix.  The Letter Writer and a documentary called Happy.  I highly recommend both.  There were some wonderful quotes and messages on giving and caring for others but here were two of my favorites.

"If you want good and helping people around you, be good and helping."   - Stanley, Letter Writer

"I see my life as a loan from God.  I want to pay him back in full...plus interest." - Happy

I think modeling these attitudes, especially for children, is so important.  The more we all step out of our comfort zone to model an attitude of compassion and giving the more we are going to attract people with similar attitudes.  At the same time you'll be able to influence all those around you in a positive way and leave the world a better place then when you got here.  I truly believe the harder we search to live out our purpose in life full-force the more fulfilling our lives will become.

We are all divinely designed and perfectly made for the work of mankind and to do that with all your heart and soul...I can't think of anything more rewarding.

Day 63 - Candy and encouragement for the neighborhood
