Day 93 - Empowered a Woman by Making a Loan

I heard about this wonderful organization last week that allows individuals to loan money (as little as $25) to men and women living in poverty.  The loans allow them to begin and sustain their own small businesses to better living situations for their families and in turn their community.  The repayment rate is 99.01% and once your loans are re-paid you may remove your money, donate it to the organization or filter it back in to help another individual in need.  How empowering is that?!!?

The organization is called Kiva and is a non-profit organization with a mission to connect people through lending to alleviate poverty. Leveraging the internet and a worldwide network of microfinance institutions, Kiva lets individuals lend as little as $25 to help create opportunity around the world.

I personally live in such a bubble and really have no grasp on the extreme poverty around the world.  I may have a perception of poverty but without ever experiencing it or seeing it for myself, am totally naive.  So this is a perfect opportunity for me to become more aware and informed as well as empowered to make a difference and change the world one small loan at a time.

How it Works
